Here we are again, at the front door. I love front doors. They can add so much to the way a house looks. I enjoy looking at older homes especially. Seeing the beautiful designs of doors of years ago makes me happy.
So when we were talking about what to do with our front door, we knew it was going to be an adventure. And an adventure it was! Are you ready for a little back story? Ok, Great, Here we go… Let’s rewind a little…
We got married in our back yard. (I’ll do a whole big post on that later.) For a Honeymoon, we decided on Niagra Falls. I guess after working on an old house we both felt a bit of nostalgia was fitting. As with most of our trips, we try to find antique stores along the way. One just never knows what treasures can be found. And on our way to our honeymoon spot we found a whole warehouse of treasures.
Actually, My super amazing husband found the salvage yard. This place was massive! We even received a map upon entering and it was needed! Everything you could imagine filled this space. We could easily get lost, both literally and figuratively. So much stuff to pick from but we needed to stay focused. Looking for a front door was our mission today. We already knew we would be coming back for future treasure hunts.
Towards the rows and rows of old salvaged doors, we were directed. And among those rows we found our door. It was going to need some work but we imagined it was going to be perfect!
Isn’t she pretty! A little dirty? Yes. A bit rough around the edges but very sturdy. And a bonus! The original hardware and key was still intact. And my husband pulled out his best ‘McGyver” and got it fuctional again. We did add some new hardware for security reasons but we kept the original to keep it real.
Hubby got to work on making a side-lite to match and I went to work on sanding, staining and painting. Not going to include all the ‘how to’s’ here, but here’s a couple of pictures.
Side-lite made to match.
Strip and sand
Exterior paint in my favorite front door color. Side-lite added
Stain and clear coat interior. Hinges from original front door.
So there she is! Cleaned up nice, Right?
And Now The Next Step! Opening the front of the house! Ugh! I’m going to my day job! I think it’s crazy scary to see a gaping hole in any part of the house. Especially the front!
Seriously, this is crazy. I’m going to work. Just have to trust that that hole is going to be filled in by the time I get back home. “Bye guys. See you later.”
Hey Matt! Thanks for your help. He came all the way up from Florida to help his Dad.
For a reminder, the house had two front doors when we bought it. Below is what it looked like the morning of demo.
Then, A gaping hole!
And now… TaDaa!
And there she is. All put back together. Mixing a little new with a little old and coming out beautiful. Looks like it was made to be together. Just like a lock and key.
That’s all for now. Until next time… happy treasure hunting.
